Winter 2008 – 2009 Makeup Trend #4: Use Bronzer to Bring Some Sunshine to Your Face
A bit of bronzer can really perk up your looks in the wintertime. Brighten your face for a healthier glow and you can really enjoy your renewed appearance thanks to a bit of bronzer. Daniel McFadden of Prive Salon in Beverly Hills, CA and owner of Daniel McFadden Cosmetics notes that blush is not prominent this season, but a golden blush or bronzer with a touch of color on the apples of your cheeks makes for a great winter makeover.
Doris Dalton shares a few additional tips as well as her own recommendations for which color bronzer you should use based on the undertones in your skin.
“Especially in the cold grey days of winter, a little bit of sunshine can do wonders for your mood – and it is possible to get a sun-kissed look without coming off fake,” says Doris Dalton. “Most people mistakenly believe you can’t use bronzer in the winter – the main trick especially in winter is to know that a little goes a long way. The right application tool also makes a big difference because proper blending is critical.
“I prefer powder based bronzer like Dalton’s Bronzer with Gold Pearl Essence – just a light dust with the included Puki brush gives you just the right amount of summer sunshine when it is still cold and dark outside. Aside from the Dalton line, I suggest you look for brown, gold, bronze and cinnamon shades according to the natural undertones in your skin.”
Best Bronzer Colors Based on Natural Skin Tone / Undertones, from Doris Dalton:
• If you already have pinkish skin, look for a bronzer with a touch of pink, or for darker skin, cinnamon.
• Olive skin is best enhanced by shades of honey, amber, and orange.
• Yellow or golden skin is best matched with shades of gold, tan, and brown.
• Brown skin should be paired by tawnies and browns.
Winter 2008 – 2009 Makeup Trend #5: Wear Heavier Foundation to Protect Your Skin
If you like to wear foundation on your face, feel free to go for it this winter. For those of you who don’t care for the feeling of foundation, there is good news. Different companies are making lighter products that don’t feel “caked-on” your face. Just look around your favorite cosmetic stores or ask your stylist at your local salon the next time you are in for a cut or style.
“In the summer you tend to go light on foundation, but the opposite is true for winter,” says Daniel McFadden of Daniel McFadden Cosmetics. “A heavier foundation can also protect against cold and wind. I recommend Girda Spillmann's Bio Fond cream makeup in Weekend.”
Winter 2008 – 2009 Makeup Trend #6: Paint Nails in Deep, Rich Tones
Makeup artists agree that the hot nail polish colors for the winter will be bold and beautiful for sure. In keeping with the smoky eye trend, we of course see grey again for nails. In addition, try these hot nail polish colors for winter 2008 – 2009:
• Gunmetal Grey
• Deep Purple
• Cranberry
• Indigo
• Turquoise
Winter 2008 – 2009 Makeup Trend #7: WOW Brows – Keep those brows in great shape!
This winter, don’t let your brows go. Sometimes the bitter cold and dry skin take our minds away from some of our normal beauty tasks, but winter 2008 – 2009 is a great time to keep your eyebrows in perfect shape.
Your brows are the frame of your face - the simple step of grooming brows makes a huge difference in how you look - even if you do nothing else,” says Doris Dalton. “Brows are important this season. Visit your favorite beautician for a professional brow shaping – it’s the best investment you can make.”
In keeping eyebrows in great shape, Dalton suggests that mature women can use Dalton Brow Fix to fill in brows as needed.
“As women age, our brows can naturally become sparse and you definitely want to avoid the fake or filled in look,” Dalton notes. “Unlike some eyebrow gels that feel sticky, Dalton Brow Fix is made with cellulose fibers to ensure a more natural look. These micronized natural cellulose fibers mimic natural brow hairs to make brows appear thicker and fuller. Coloring pigments fill in any sparse areas, and the conditioning cream nourishes while keeping stray hairs neatly in place. I also love that Dalton Brow Fix is long wearing and stays on until you take it off… very handy since most days I only get one shot at the makeup mirror. Four colors means you can match all hair colors.”
Tip from Daniel McFadden: “You want a full eyebrow, but do not use a stencil.”
