Beautiful Hairstyles for Groom’s Mom

mother-of-the-groom-hairstylesAs the mother of the groom, you will be playing an important role in the wedding. There are many things that you need to take care of in the lead up to the wedding. One of the most important things that you have to consider, however, is your hairstyle. Hairstyles for the groom’s mom should look polished and chic. Your hairstyle for your son’s wedding should also compliment your face shape and your outfit.

The French Twist

A French twist is a classic hairstyle for formal occasions. It is stylish, chic and polished. It is the perfect hairstyle for a formal wedding, and it is fairly easy to achieve this look. Begin by brushing your hair until it is tangle-free. Bring all of your hair neatly over your left shoulder, while ensuring that it remains smooth and tangle free. Then, take a few bobby pins, which match the color of your hair, and pin all of your hair to the left side. Place the pins in the hair vertically, as the hair will stay in place better.

Next, begin to twist your hair to the right, until you create a roll. You can twist the hair around your finger if it is easier for you. After this, hold the roll that you have created with one hand and place a few bobby pins, vertically, on the underside of the roll, near your scalp. If you have any hair sticking out of the roll, then simply tuck it in and hold it in place with bobby pins.

Loose Waves with a Side Part

An ideal hairstyle for your son’s wedding is loose waves. Wearing your hair wavy, with your hair parted to the side is a stylish hairstyle, which works particularly well for weddings with a more casual tone. Achieving this style is easy. Simply take small to medium sized pieces of hair and curl them using a curling iron. Make sure that the pieces of hair aren’t too small. If you curl sections that are too small, you will end up with tight ringlets, rather than loose waves. For an extra glamorous look, sweep all of your hair over one shoulder, and secure it using bobby pins, which match the color of your hair.

The Half-Up Do

One of the best hairstyles for the groom’s mom is the half-up do. This hairstyle is highly versatile and it looks great for both formal and casual weddings. This hairstyle is ideal for those who don’t want to wear all of their hair down, or wear an up-do. Achieving this look is easy. Simply take the front portion of your hair and clip it in place at the back of your head, using bobby pins. You have a great deal of freedom with this hairstyle. You can part your hair however you want, and you can decide how much of your hair you want to clip back.

DIY Summer Pedi Designs

diy-summer-pedi-designsSummer is the perfect season to be carefree. People dress down to their tank tops and shorts and take some much needed time away from work and the stresses of life. Your toes should get a taste of carefree living too. So put away those closed toe heels and slip on some comfy flip flops. To get the most of out that summer feel, pair your casual clothes with a fresh and vibrant new pedicure to show off the next time you stroll through the mall.

When you speak of pedicures, the first thing that comes to mind is visiting the nearest nail spa. However, why pay for something that you can do easily on your own? Summer is about experimenting and learning new things, so why not spend an afternoon giving yourself one? Summer pedicures are supposed to be fun, a bit messy, and enjoyable. If the prospect of a DIY pedicure is not your cup of tea, why not invite your friends over for a killer pedi party? If you need help getting started, here are a few tips on how to pull off a successful summer pedi.

Summer’s Perfect Colors

Summer’s colors are loud, vibrant, and eye-catching. Forget about soft pastels and semi-transparent colors – spring is officially over. For summer, you want bold colors like neon hues and metallic ones like gold and silver. For beginners, orange is a great summer color that’s also relatively safe. It blends well with all sorts of skin tones, depending on the shade you choose. You can also try bold shades of blue or even hot pink, if you’re daring enough.

Easy To Wear Designs

Summer pedicure designs don’t have to be complicated – in fact, you don’t even need your own nail art kit to pull them off. Summer is all about getting people’s attention, so choose two colors that are different, but blend well with each other, like yellow and blue. Choose a solid yellow color and use it as a base. Then using a nail art pen or even a toothpick, use the blue color to create designs like swirls, circles, and even waves. If the design is messy, don’t worry. It adds to the effect of things. Remember to top it off with a top coat to seal the design.

If you want to take the design to the next level, you can add more colors instead of just two. You may also alternate base colors by using the color yellow on one toe, then blue on the next. You can also use a glittery top coat to give your toes some sparkle.

If purchasing a lot of nail polish shades isn’t your thing, or you’d like something easier, you can scour the Internet for printable nail art or nail art stickers. These are extremely easy to wear because you just have to stick it on your toe nails and paint over them with a clear top coat. Most people prefer these because they can simply change summer pedi designs when they get bored with their current one.

You may also use fimo canes or fimo sticks. These are small sticks with a design embedded in them. You simply cut thin slices from the roll and attach it to your toenails. Most people sell fimo canes by the bundle, so you can get different designs and fill your toenails with flowers, butterflies, suns, stars, and hearts if you want to. Just remember to invest in a quality top coating to keep the designs in place.

While most of the design ideas may not seem special, remember that summer is a time to be carefree. Your summer pedi doesn’t have to be complicated – with some nail polish, glitter, or nail art stickers, you can take your pedi design wherever your creativity takes you. No matter what design you choose, the important thing is that you’re comfortable with it and that you had fun creating it.

Munchkin Swaddle Angel Blanket Review

IMAG2562

With so many baby products available these days—swaddle blankets, sun canopies, nursing covers, and more—it can be overwhelming to try to pack up your baby’s things when you’re going somewhere. The idea of multitasking baby products is super appealing, especially to moms who are tired of bringing two or three separate bags everywhere they go. Thankfully, every once in a while you might find a product that stands up to multiple demands of everyday life with an infant. The Swaddle Angel Blanket two-pack by Munchkin is one such product.

The Munchkin Swaddle Angel Blankets are made of rayon that comes from ultra soft bamboo. Each blanket is a generous 40″ by 40″ and my favorite feature is that each of the corners has a little ribbon loop that allows you to hook or connect the blanket in a variety of positions for a number of different purposes. The fabric is soft and lightweight, almost gauzy, with a loose knit that lets some of the air come through. The center of the Swaddle Angel blankets features a thicker, double-layer sewn square to maintain privacy when nursing or to give a little extra padding for the baby, whether napping or during diaper changes or something else altogether.

I received a set of these cool, multitasking swaddle blankets for the purpose of review. I love the pretty patterns, which feature colors like bone white and slate gray or bone white and chocolate brown with gold. The designs, like a type of animal print or tribal pattern, are somewhat abstract but very fun and stylish. The box says these blankets are suitable for use as swaddles, sun protection, tummy time blankets, nursing covers, and even a sarong.

I have personally enjoyed using them for their sun protection offerings, looping the corners over the stroller handles and going on our merry way. I will caution you – I was not paying attention to what I was doing as I was in a bit of a rush at one point, and we did run over the blanket with the stroller, leaving a pretty hefty tear / runner in the double-sewn section. This was entirely my fault for being so careless, but it may be worth mentioning and warning you so you don’t do the same thing.

swaddle_blanket_boy

Even though we ran over the blanket because I didn’t adjust it properly and it was a bit too long, I have used it as a sun protection shade a few times since the initial use. I really like the corner loops and how easy it is to create a barrier between your baby and the sun. I was easily able to cover up my daughter’s legs in the stroller with the blanket folded in half, and it did help to protect her from the sun one day when we forgot our sunblock at home.

I now try to keep one of these Swaddle Angel blankets with us wherever we go, especially since they have so many great purposes and offerings. I would highly recommend this product to new moms who like to make their days more efficient.

The two-pack of Munchkin Swaddle Angel Blankets retails for $49.99. For more information, please see: Girl Swaddle Angel Blankets or Boy Swaddle Angel Blankets.

Laser Hair Removal: Weighing the Risks & Benefits

beachcoupleIn life, there are two sides to everything. Just as with any cosmetic procedure, laser hair removal involves both benefits and risks. For those considering treatment, it’s important to weigh both the good and the bad to determine if laser hair removal is right for you.

The Benefits
 Permanently reduces unwanted hair
 Safe, quick treatment
 Appropriate for most areas of the body, including the face, legs, back, chest, bikini area, underarms, and other areas
 Few side effects
 Minimal recovery
 No downtime

The Risks
 Some patients may not be good candidates for laser hair removal, for instance individuals with dark or tanned skin and/or light hair.
 Darker skinned individuals may be at an increased risk for pigmentation changes.
 Though rare and more often associated with an incorrectly performed procedure, blisters and burns are a potential complication.
 Must avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen after treatment.
 Treatment may involve some discomfort, requiring a numbing cream or other anesthetic.

laser-hair-removal-beachIt should also be noted that the cost of laser hair removal is pretty affordable at a national average physician fee of $358 per session according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS) 2011 statistics. However, as most patients require a series of treatments for more complete hair removal – anywhere from 5 to 15 sessions – the overall treatment costs can get up there. For most patients, the overwhelming benefits of permanent reduction in unwanted hair well outweigh any potential risks or disadvantages.

Stars and Glitter Patriotic Pedicure Toenail Designs for 4th of July, Labor Day, and Memorial Day

pure-ice-nail-reviewSummer holidays are some of the most fun holidays all year, especially when it comes to cute manicures and pedicures. I’ve never been one for plain red toenails—I always felt they made me look older than I am or that they looked like someone else’s feet. But I think I finally found some red nail polish I can wear on my toes without any worries at all… I recently received the opportunity to review the Pure Ice Stars & Stripes collection of nail polish and I couldn’t be happier with the results. If you’re looking for fun patriotic nail polish ideas or for nail designs with stars, glitter nails, or simple red, white, and blue nails, you’re sure to be thrilled as well.

The Stars & Stripes nail polish collection by Pure Ice includes: Dazzle Me (silver glitter), Superstar! (white), Freedom (red & blue sparkle with silver stars), Siren (red), and Wide Awake (blue sparkle). I so far have only had the chance to try Siren and Freedom, but I can tell you this is the perfect combination for a girl who loves red and things that sparkle. I showed my husband and he asked about how I got the stars on there. He honestly couldn’t believe they were inside the bottle of nail polish and just painted on like that!

patriotic-pedicure(Granted, I did have to fish around for enough stars for what I wanted to do to my nails, but it’s to be expected and I think it is a genius option as opposed to having a totally separate base coat, sparkle top coat, and loose stars!)

I painted my patriotic pedicure on my deck while my daughter played next to me. I only did one or two toes at a time so I could watch her closely, but it only took me five minutes or so to get the first coat of red applied. I slapped on a quick second coat, though I’m not convinced I even needed one. My toes didn’t look so alien in this red as I used to think they did with other nail polishes. (Is it because I’m a mom now? Because I’m in my 30’s?)

I ended up falling asleep before I could complete my patriotic pedicure designs, so, the next day I did the fun part—I put the sparkle and stars coat on each toenail, putting two stars on my big toes and one star on each other toe. I made sure enough sparkles were spaced throughout the nails and I let them dry. I have to tell you, I am thrilled with the results. I like a professional pedicure as much as the next girl, but I love how fast and easy it was to get gorgeous, sparkly, and festive nails at home in a matter of minutes.

To be fair and honest, I will, of course, disclose my only point of contention–I know this would happen with any 3-D nail art, so take this point with a grain of salt… When I did curl up into my bed between the satin sheets after completing the sparkle and stars top coat, it felt like my pedicure was getting stuck to the sheets or dragging across them a bit oddly. I’ve since learned to tuck my toes or keep them closer to the fleece blanket rather than the satin sheets.

stars-nail-polishAnother thing that impressed me about this collection is that the polishes hold up amazingly well on my toes. I have not had to reapply yet, aside from when I accidentally smudged my toe on my flip-flop before it was dry. (Mama multitasking mistake, not a rookie mistake!) In reading more about this product line, I’ve come to learn that all of Pure Ice’s nail polishes feature a long-wear formula, making your mani’s and pedi’s last longer. These products are also free of formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP, making them a smart choice for health reasons as well.

Are you ready for the best news of all? How much do you think a high quality, totally functional, durable, and brilliantly beautiful, versatile bottle of nail polish should cost? Or how much it really does cost? Wait for it… you can get Pure Ice’s Stars & Stripes collection for just $1.99 per bottle, meaning you can have the entire set for less than 10 bucks! What are you waiting for? Get to your nearest Walmart or hop on over to www.pureicecosmetics.com so you can get your patriotic pedicure in place before the 4th of July!

Romantic Summer Hairstyles

Out with the cold, in with the humid! Warm weather brings us wonderful opportunities for things to do outside in the sunshine, but also sends us a few curve balls when it comes to keeping our appearance—and especially our hair—intact. Summertime often mixes up humidity in the air, intense thunderstorms, hot and sticky weather, and of course, salt and sea. Even the chlorine from swimming pools can take its toll on our locks, leaving hair dry and dull. Thankfully, a few simple tips can help you to still achieve sexy and romantic summer hairstyles no matter what the weather.

No matter what your hair color, you can find a perfect summer hairstyle to suit your mood and personality. Try these quick and easy tips to get gorgeous hair that looks great for any occasion this summer and beyond.

Volume All the Way
Girls with fine hair can especially appreciate this summer hairstyle tip for getting more volume and body in your hair. After your shower, gently towel off your hair a bit and then apply a golf ball sized amount of mousse to your hair, starting from the roots down. (I’ve been using Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse.) If you have it, apply some root boosting spray (My pick is John Frieda Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root Booster.) Next, blow-dry your hair upside-down using the normal heat setting. Finish with a moment or two on the cool setting, and style as desired. Spritz with a light finishing spray to hold everything in place and enjoy your new-found body and volume!

Waves and Curls
We think it’s safe to say that waves and curls will be here to stay as far as romantic summer hairstyles go. No matter if you sport sexy red hair, black hair, blonde hair, or brown hair, a wavy or curly hairstyle can be just what you need to spice up your summer. Try a set of hot rollers to give your hair some shape and dimension. Add a sweet hair accessory like a bow or a romantic hairclip to enhance your look. You can also place a flower behind your ear for a true hint of exotic romance.

Sweet and Flowing
Face it, lots of guys love long and flowing hair that teases as it drifts in the breeze. Fight the urge to go with a ponytail for the sixth day in a row and go for a long, straight hairstyle. Bust out your flatiron if you need it, have your best hair products on hand, and take the needed steps to nail down a look that leaves you looking like you just stepped out of a fairy tale.

You may also benefit from a blow-drying technique that smoothes your air nicely as it dries. Towel-dry your hair for a few minutes first. Then, pin most of your hair atop your head. Starting at the back of your head, blow-dry sections of hair about two inches wide and not very thick. Use a round brush with a metal insert to curl the ends under or flip them out, if you like. Keep setting free small sections of hair to blow-dry until your entire head of hair is dried and smooth. This beautiful look should last fairly well, but consider spraying a touch of finishing spray if you think you’ll need it.

When all else fails, you can also twist your hair into a messy bun or toss it up into a ponytail. These looks make it easy to look great, whether you’re a mom on the go or a busy career woman hopping between conferences, trainings, and life in the fast lane. A fancy alligator hairclip can be a wonderful accessory for any woman and you’ll more than likely get your money’s worth if you choose one that you can wear for work or for play.

These are just a few ideas for fun and romantic summer hairstyles. What is your favorite hairdo to wear in the summertime? What do you think of these tips? Feel free to share your thoughts in our comments below.

Clear 7-Day Scalp & Hair Challenge & Product Review

As a new mom, I have a newfound appreciation for shower time. Even more than before, I enjoy products with rich lather, intoxicatingly wonderful fragrances, and no-nonsense results. I don’t have time to mess with products that don’t offer at least one, if not all three, of these desirable characteristics.

I recently received Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy Shampoo and Conditioner products (from Unilever) as well as a beautiful brush to set me up for Clear’s 7-Day Scalp & Hair Challenge. The challenge aimed to help women achieve stronger, more beautiful hair in 7 days, guaranteed (due to less breakage when combing vs. non-conditioning shampoo). The challenge also informed us that the scalp provides 99% of hair’s natural strength and beauty. The products in this challenge, Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy™ shampoo and conditioner, contain a rich blend of vitamins and nutrients, 10 to be precise, known as Nutrium10.

On first use, I really enjoyed the fragrance of the Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy shampoo and conditioner products. The scent reminds me of old school herbal essences in the yellow bottle. I believe I may have said this after a previous experience with the Clear products, but it’s true! I really enjoy using them for that reason. Each day I enjoy the fragrance as well as the other benefits these products provide.

The shampoo produces a rich lather that leaves my hair and scalp feeling super clean. The suds work their magic and then wash effortlessly out of my hair. Same with the conditioner, which smoothes onto my hair so nicely and rinses out cleanly. It’s rare to find a product that leaves your hair just feeling “wet” when you step out of the shower, but this duo does it. No greasy residue, no weighted-down feeling.

As far as whether these made my hair stronger and more beautiful, it’s hard to say. I have to admit my hair seems a bit dry lately, so I think the winter has really wreaked some havoc on my locks. No way to blame that on products or expect products to do a miraculous turnaround in just a week of use. I don’t think I’ve ever had a real problem with breakage, though, which is a great thing. I’ve seen a conditioning mask by Clear and I’m curious if something like that might be the answer to the dryness my hair’s suffering right now. Will keep you posted if I find a suitable fix!

All in all, I am very pleased with my experience in using Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy™ shampoo and conditioner. I would recommend this team of products for anyone who wants a shampoo and conditioner that smells great, lathers well, and rinses away clean, leaving hair very soft and manageable. You can find Clear products starting around $4.79 and up at your favorite mass market retail stores, pharmacies, and on Amazon.com. Hairstyles of the 1930’s

Glamour With Feathers by RgbspaceJean Harlow, a famous actress of the era known as the blonde bombshell, played the leading actress in a romantic comedy rightfully named, “Platinum Blonde” in 1932. Little did she know that she was shaping the 30’s hairstyles, as men and women around the nation were going wild for her “bleached-blonde hair.”  Apparently not for the same reasons, women around the nation began dying their hair with peroxide and the men surely didn’t seem to object.  Although the platinum-blonde look was not for everybody, it created the bleaching era, which would lead to many distinct new hairstyles and colors for the new decade.

In the 1920s the popular “bob” gave hairstylists a short-lived, new beginning for their businesses. The naturally short nature of the bob cut or style required frequent trimming to maintain the proper appearance and shape. Therefore, it was crucial for the “bobbed” women to visit the salon way more often than before. Due to the worsening economic state of our nation at that time, the bob lost popularity in the early 1930s, “cutting in” a new era of longer, more traditional styles that were less expensive, but yet very attractive. However, unwilling to surrender the “hair freedom” they had gained in the 20’s, women remained loyal to their own hair salons.

Hair care innovations of the time were rapidly coming of age. Women with longer haircuts could opt to pull their hair back into a low bun. Achieving this look is pretty simple, just by combing your hair straight back from the face, and gathering most of the hair into a ponytail and wrapping it around either side to form a bun.

The 30’s hairstyle would benefit from advancements in many areas of hair care including hair products and hair styles. Shampoos for various hair types and textures weren’t available previously, but now they were beginning to be introduced to the public at an alarming rate. Major advancements in technology occurred with the invention of various hair-styling tools like the curling iron and additions to the permanent wave machine. Fashionable hairstyles in the ’30s would prove to survive longer than the short bob cut of the previous decade, so up-dos became popular.

A surprising new look that came about around the early 1930’s is the finger wave. Finger waves are incredibly difficult to create outside the salon. They are created literally by hand with each curly strand being sculpted by wrapping the hair around the finger while curling. It may sound incredibly easy, but many hairdressers today cannot do them. Creating finger waves is a highly skilled practical craft and having this “old Hollywood glamour hair” process done to your hair is time consuming and a little more expensive. If you want to try something different or perhaps start your own trend, it is best to seek out hairstylists or salons that specialize in old Hollywood hairstyles. They will surely make you feel as glamorous as a 1930’s Hollywood starlet.

The Catwalk Collection by TIGI

TIGI Haute Iron spray

In case you’re not in the know, TIGI is a renowned hair care brand that offers the coolest variety of products. Of these, the most notable may be their Bed Head product line that helps perfect the I-rolled-out-of-bed-like-this look.

If you are desiring dramatic hairstyles like those of the designer fashion, I’d like to point you in the direction of the Catwalk line. This line has been seen on the runways for collections by Chris Benz, Laura Siegel, Ann Yee, and more. Catwalk by TIGI is not just limited to the coifs of supermodels; this collection is available for purchase and to find a home in your hair care collection.

I received two samples from the line to try out for myself- the Haute Iron Spray and the Finishing Hairspray. From start to finish, these products help create flawless looks with extra shine. With thin hair, I often run into problems of using too much product, but these two TIGI items were easy to use and to avoid over-using.

It’s so nice to have a haircare item that can multi-function! I know it’s sometimes silly to choose a product for the scent or any other secondary feature, but I find myself reaching for my TIGI sprays over others because I KNOW- without any doubt- the spray will not only disperse evenly, but will smell absolutely fabulous. The Haute Iron Spray and Finishing Spray feature Mandarin Patchouli Noir and Tobacco Flower Noir fragrances, respectively.

Use the Haute Iron Spray from the Sleek Mystique collection before using any heat tool. Although the product is noted to be designed for straight hair, I’ve had no problem using it when blow-drying or curling my hair. Designed to protect locks from heat, the ultra-fine spray coats hair to maintain moisture and protect color-treated hair.

TIGI Finishing Hairspray Avoid hair-don’ts from damage with irons and dryers and create smooth soft hair-dos with TIGI’s Haute Iron Spray. If that’s not enough to sell you yet, AND you style your hair daily, this product will also provide much needed strength and prevent overworked and weak hair.

After you’ve achieved your desired look, top it off with the Finishing Hairspray from TIGI’s Catwalk Session Series. Designed to give you brushable, flexible, long-lasting hold, this product is ideal for updos, curls, and creating volume.

The fine mist of the spray coats several layers of hair for a firm hold. The series of hairsprays are specially designed to go through layers of hair to create a bond that will hold every part of your style- not just the top. The Finishing Spray has a medium to high hold, depending on the thickness and texture of your hair.
